These Two Women Are Changing The B-Word, Celebrating Baddies And Bosses In Tulum

Venturing to new countries typically precedes eye opening revelations from travelers seeking clarity and inspiration from their proactive journeys.  Whether a Girls Trip or a business trip, nobody travels without a goal in mind. Sade Ayodele and Sydney Chandler, founders of The Baddie Brunch Series and  The B is For Boss  take traveling with a purpose to a new level with Baddies & Bosses Take Tulum. 

Aiming to bring Black, Afro-Latina and Latina women from across the United States together for an unforgettable experience in Tulum, Mexico, August 2-5 will be full of collaborations and effortless slays.  The purpose of the retreat is to provide women of color between the ages of 21 and 35 he opportunity to celebrate both the BADDIE in them and the BOSS unapologetically. 

Baddies & Bosses Take Tulum founders approached the conference with the mindset of providing opportunity and space without breaking the bank. With rooms starting at $649, compared to the almost $4000  price tag of similar ventures, this event aimed to be as financially inclusive as possible. The retreat serves as a "safe space" for women of color in their 20s and early 30s to share the ups and downs on the quest for true adulthood and the keys to leveling up. 

Both Chandler and Ayodele, baddies and bosses themselves are themselves at this pivotal point in life.  For them, Baddies & Bosses Take Tulum was not only creating an outlet for other women but building a sanctuary for themselves.  I was able to interview both ladies about the Baddie Brunch Series, the Tulum excursion and remaining authentic in empowering Black Women. 

Micia Girl: How important was it for you to create a space for black women and other minorities ?

Sade Ayodele: For me, it was very important to create a space for black women and other minorities to feel represented in the “Girl Boss” movement because I felt we were being left out/underrepresented. While I’m always excited to see women in general win, it’s especially important for me to see women who look like me celebrated and winning, because representation is key and helps keep me motivated as well as other to see someone succeed that looks like them.

Sydney Chandler: Not only was it important for me to create a space for Black women, I wanted to create a brand that catered to our transplants moving to Texas. With so many career opportunities in the great state of Texas, there has been an influx of dope Black women to move to Dallas, Houston, and Austin. Often times, they are rebuilding personal and professional connections. The Baddie Brunch Series aims to help build strong communities for these women to find fun things to do in the city and connect with more dope Black women. While the professional aspect is important -- we like to focus on building personal relationships. Our motto is simple, Celebrate. Collaborate. Slay. Socialize.


 MG: How did the idea for the Baddie Brunch series come about? How was the B Is For Boss conceptualized?

SA: The B is for Boss -If you are a woman, you have likely been called one of the "B-words" (bossy and/or bitchy) at one point in your life. If you’re anything like me, you have probably been called both. As an alpha, outspoken female, I often wondered why is it that men can express themselves in the workplace and social settings with a level of boldness, that is herald as powerful and dynamic. However, when a woman does it, she's merely reduced to bossy or bitchy. It’s absurd and I refused to accept these one dimensional definitions. So I wanted to create a community where I could encourage women to redefine the "B-word" and live out their dreams, on their terms. In a world that's constantly telling us, we are too much or not enough, I wanted to create a community that encouraged women to redefine themselves as they saw fit. Through #TheBisForBoss, I helping young professionals and female entrepreneurs, get clear on how to create, communicate and manage their personal brand and advance their careers.

SC: In 2016, I had the idea to get dressed up and take cute photos with all my friends over brunch -- the catch was not all my friends were familiar with one another. In the wake of Resting Bitch Face, I was determined to bring these dope women together and bring positive vibes. After the success of that brunch, I started noticing an influx of new faces moving to Dallas, TX -- which would later be known as transplants! 

MG: What has been the reception from both the Baddie Brunch series and B is For Boss?  How have young women been impacted ?

SA: The reception has been really good. Honestly, it’s been way more than expected. We won’t necessarily see the full impact of the retreat until afterwards, but I think it definitely has given a lot of you women of color something to be excited about. An affordable retreat, with like minded women that look like them and have similar/shared experiences -- it’s an exciting time. I know for me personally, coming up I always yearned for these spaces; especially as a lover of travel. One of our biggest goals this year was to make this affordable and attainable for women in there mid to late twenties, even early thirties an opportunity to experience that, and I think we did that.

MG: With a new black women or WOC empowerment event popping up every other day, how do you all remain authentic in message, mission and goals?

SA: For me, I remain authentic by continuing to create a content and a platform/events for events that I like to see. While on the surface they are popping up everyday, for me personally I haven’t found them to be a one size fits all. I like to think of this industry no different than the food industry. Yes, there was a McDonald’s before Burger King or Wendys but that doesn’t mean everyone is only eating french fries from one spot. Same for the grocery store, you go to the milk or bread aisle and their are dozens of brands, types, etc. for consumers. For me, as long as I stay in my lane, create content and events for my target audience, then it will continue to grow. From that point forward, I let the experience speak for itself. 

MG: Do you think the term Girl Boss has grown or hindered the success of minority women in any industry?

SA: I don’t think the term “Girl Boss” has hindered the success of minority women in any industry. I think the term “Girl Boss” however has forgotten the minority woman’s nuances. With most things, there is an element of intersectionality, so while the term “Girl Boss” empowers and encourages all women to stand their ground, pursue their dreams, and live their truth, I think the overall movement fails to give highlights to the stereotypes women, particularly black women are already fighting. Which is that we are loud, we are argumentative, and we are angry. So, I know initially I shied away from calling myself a “Girl Boss” as to not come across as too pushy, or too much, or full of myself. Whereas, I feel white women have the privilege to be a “Girl Boss” and it’s cute and it’s “Independent”. There are still some narratives I have to fight, when I self identify as a Boss i.e., men thinking I’m “too independent” or that I  think that “I don’t need a man” which is not the case at all. I’m just hungry to go out and get mine and excited to be living my dreams and encouraging other women to do the same. 

MG: What do you hope will be accomplished during the retreat?

SA: We are two online female empowerment communities for diverse women, that value collaboration over competition. We have brought our two brands together to create an unforgettable weekend retreat. We are passionate about providing diverse women opportunities to celebrate, collaborate, slay and socialize. We also are committed to providing them the resources and knowledge they need to successfully navigate their careers and entrepreneurial endeavors. We have achieved this both on and offline by hosting networking mixers, brunches, webinars and curating digital content. As a result, we have fostered a dynamic and valuable network. We are now taking these same empowering vibes to Tulum,Mexico for the perfect retreat that will be equal parts relaxing and fun.
