5 Anticipated HBCU Football Games

The  arrival of spring football games serve as a reminder that football season is the best time of the year. Football season is a magical time no matter the college or university however HBCU football games are unmatched. Historically Black Colleges & Universities are more than just for football competition. Football games at HBCUs are reminiscent of small block parties.  Homecoming included, the HBCU football game experience is unparalleled. The bands provide the sound, the dancers add the moves, the cheerleaders increase the spirit and the football teams of course, play the game. 

Although the prideful HBCU spirit is rampant among HBCU students, alumni, and sports enthusiasts, football programs and conferences such as The Big 10 and the SEC dominate mainstream sports as  far as popularity and media coverage. Even though the commercialization of college sports sometimes leaves our institutions in the dust, the HBCU football scene is not one to be slept on.

HBCU football programs  have produced iconic professional athletes. This growing list includes Lem Barney of Jackson State, Hugh Douglas of Central State, Larry Little of Bethune Cookman, and John Stallworth of Alabama A&M.  The list of great HBCU athletes would be an infinite scroll. HBCU football continues to grow and produce excellence beyond the field,  and this upcoming season will be no different.  Here are 5 HBCU anticipated HBCU Football Games for 2017 season.

KSU vs Tuskegee: October 21, 2017 (Frankfort KY

The Kentucky State University football program accomplished many feats the 2016 football program.  His first year as head coach, John L Smith was named SIAC Coach of the Year for taking the Thorobred football program places it has never gone before, namely the SIAC championship. In the 2016 season, KSU dethroned Tuskegee University on their homecoming as the underdog, winning the game. This year, TU visits KSU for their homecoming.   Will they be able to return the homecoming "L" to KSU? 

 

FAMU vs TSU: September 16, 2017 (Location TBA

The Tennessee State University Tigers and the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Rattlers are set to square off this September. TSU, a member of the Ohio Valley Conference has a dominate football program which the Rattlers will have to work hard to defeat. The football game is not only awaited for the field competition but for the atmosphere. This game comes with 2 great bands, and hilarious meme battles online between the two institutions. Between the bands and the school pride, the spirit of this game makes it one to watch. 

Grambling vs Alcorn: October 21 (Grambling, LA)

Grambling State had a stellar 2016 football season. The Tigers had a record of 12-1 and went undefeated in the SWAC.  Grambling not only won the Celebration Bowl against North Carolina Central University but also won the SWAC championship beating out Alcorn for the title.  Alcorn finished their season with a 5-6 record, 5-4 in the SWAC. The 2017 meeting of Grambling and Alcorn will be a showcase of athleticism. The Alcorn Braves will have to return playing their best game in order to avoid a second consecutive L from Grambling.

NCCU vs NCAT: November 18, 2017 (Greensboro, NC)

The Aggies and the Eagles have a deep rooted rivalry. Both football teams are full of talent that is bound to be a close game.  The two schools met each other in 2016 and North Carolina Central University defeated North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University by over 20 points (21-42).  The 2015 football match-up of the two rivals also ended in a W for the Eagles. Can NCCU pull off the three-peat?  We will find out this November. 

ASU vs AAMU: October 28, 2017 (Birmingham, AL)

ASU vs AAMU. Magic city classic is one of the biggest HBCU classics. Last year was the 75th anniversary of this Alabama classic and more than 70,000 ticket holders were in attendance. The Alabama State Hornets and the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University Bulldogs are set to face off in the 76th Magic City Classic. If it's anything like the 2016 game, It will be one to watch. The bulldogs edged out the hornets in an overtime showdown, winning by only one point.  AAMU leads ASU in Magic City classic wins and as close as it was last year, the 2017 game should be a thriller.
