Kelela's 'Frontline' Video Animates An Emotional Break-Up

Kelela’s ‘Sims’ inspired video for Frontline is everything. The almost life like animated characters are perfectly designed conveying the varying emotions throughout the song. Sims Kelela features her standout locs and shaven side with her clear crystal hair accessories driving a silver Mercedes Benz.

She breaks up with her boyfriend in the beginning of the song and after shedding one tear hits the road. With the top down and the hair blowing in the breeze, Kelela moves on, enjoying a blunt and picks up some friends and they even have a cool animated dance break.

Frontline, one of my favorite tracks from her studio debut ‘Take Me Apart’ confronts the complex feelings that often come with a break-up. The song is the perfect track for moving on.

With this Sims-like video, I was able to tell my story in a light-hearted but dramatic way. It’s about leaving your ex with the wind in your hair while acknowledging a curiously complex feeling of pain that he has left you for a white woman

The cool video comes from animation and visual effects director Claudia Maté and concept and creative direction came from Kelela herself and Mischa Notcutt. Watch it below:
